From Historic Foundations to a New Future

Farm Land & The Railway
1800’s

Long before the Arnott’s ovens fired up, the land around today’s Bakehouse Quarter and Ismay Reserve formed part of early colonial land grants. The area around Powells Creek passed through the hands of landowners whose names are still reflected in local landmarks such as Powells Creek and Underwood Road.

The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century made the area an attractive location for industry, helping establish what was then known as Homebush, now North Strathfield, as a major manufacturing hub.

This transport access was one of the key reasons Arnott’s selected the site for its landmark bakery. The Arnott’s purchased a six and half acre site at Homebush in 1906, with rail siding access to transport their goods across the country.

Arnott’s Factory at Bakehouse Quarter
1908–1997

Construction of the Arnott’s bakery was completed in 1908, with production continuing on the site until 1997. Over almost a century, the factory grew to become one of the largest biscuit manufacturing facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, employing generations of local workers and exporting Australian-made products around the world.

Today, the former factory has been reimagined as Bakehouse Quarter — a vibrant lifestyle destination where the site’s rich industrial heritage lives on through cafés, restaurants, retail and community spaces.

Ismay Reserve
A Landscape reimagined
2019

Much of today’s Ismay Reserve did not exist as parkland a century ago. Land acquisitions during the construction of the M4 Motorway in the 1980s, and later the WestConnex widening, created residual parcels that were ultimately consolidated into public open space. The modern Ismay Reserve opened in 2019 as part of this regeneration, transforming previously fragmented land into a valued green sanctuary for the local community.
